Led by RHS award-winning landscape designer, Pandora Ryan, the studio specialises in transforming domestic and commercial gardens and landscapes; to create beautiful and sustainable spaces that exceed clients’ expectations. Operating locally and across the UK, the studio works on the full range of scales from intimate city gardens and roof terraces to larger scale country gardens and commercial estates. The vineyards of La Geria, Lanzarote - a black lan

The vineyards of La Geria, Lanzarote - a black landscape of volcanic ash that looks like you’ve landed on the moon 🌑. El Grifo winery is one of the five oldest vineyards in Spain - founded in 1775. They grow the malvasia grape in pits or trenches, digging down below the volcanic ash to access the top soil. The walls protect the vines from the wind and the ash, which is infertile. It absorbs the humidity from the air and protects the soil from evaporation and erosion.

The captivating, modernist masterpiece that is Cesar Manrique’s courtyard garden at Melia Salinas, Lanzarote. The iconic building was created by architect Fernando Higueras in 1977, winning the International Prize for Architecture in 1979. The garden is the jewel in its crown, renovated in 2020, with every rock being numbered, removed, cleaned and returned to the exact spot that Cesar Manrique originally intended.

The stunning Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty' with its upturned flower centres and orange crimson petals that fade to a rusty brown. A later flowering perennial from July until September, its brilliant for adding height and colour, growing up to 1.2m (4ft) tall. Charmingly named Sneezeweed, it’s loved by pollinators who land on the upturned flower centres like landing pads. Cut some of the stems back by a third in June to prolong the flowering later in the season 🌺.

Monarda didyma 'Beauty of Cobham' or Bergamot. A very popular perennial in the summer section of my ‘Sensing Time’ long border and a great one for a sunny garden because of its long flowering season. Its flowers are very unusual and distinctive and its dark green leaves are aromatic. It particularly likes soil that stays moist and full sun to part shade. The only downside is its tendency to get mildew on its leaves but i think it’s worth it as I can’t find anything quite like it - yet!

Dill or Anethum graveolens - a short lived annual herb that tastes as good as it looks! It’s very easy to grow from seed and has the most beautiful, soft fluffy foliage in a mintish green. If you let it flower you’ll be rewarded with huge umbels of electric yellow that create a 3D effect in planting schemes and also last for weeks as cut flowers. Just be careful not to let it go to seed as it can take over. I used these in the summer section of my ‘Sensing Time’ Long Border at RHS Flower Show Tatton.

Spring - the season of fresh new growth and dramat

Spring - the season of fresh new growth and dramatic transitions from the depths of winter. I represented this season in my ‘Sensing Time’ Long Border for RHS Tatton Flower Show by using a colour scheme of fresh lime greens, whites and pale blues. I picked plants to represent those seen in spring such as Ammi Majus in place of Cow Parsley, Viola ‘Belmont Blue’ in place of woodland violets, and plant form to represent new growth, like the vertical structure of Eupatorium Capillifolium.

Pollinators 🐝. I try to make my planting schemes as pollinator friendly as possible. The bees love the Salvia Caradonna in the autumn section of my ‘Sensing Time’ RHS Tatton Flower Show long border. I also make sure there’s a whole range of plants that provide much needed food to the full spectrum of pollinators from hover flies, butterflies, wasps and not forgetting our over 2,500 species of moths that visit flowers at night 🌚.

I used colour to represent the changing seasons in my ‘Sensing Time’ RHS Long Border. For summer I used pale pastel pinks fading into lilac and apricot and rich russet colours for autumn. Here’s an Achillea 'Walther Funcke' with its pale yellow centres fading to rich orange, next to a lilac cosmos. One of my favourite colour combinations.

Another perennial that got lots of attention in my Long Border at RHS Tatton Park was this Verbascum ‘Cotswold Beauty’. It has stunning apricot flowers with purple stamens and lime green stems. It flowers throughout summer and grows up to 1.2m tall. It likes the sun and free draining soil and is pretty drought tolerant. It’s only a short lived perennial so don’t be surprised when it doesn’t appear after a few years but you can take root cuttings to propagate new plants, if you’re feeling particularly green fingered 🖐️.

Yes this is me combing grass 🤭. Understandably @joannecrawford_ the photographer thought I had a special comb for the job but it is in fact the one I use on my hair everyday 🤣. I don’t generally make a habit of combing grass but they did look a lot better for it and I think the judges were pleased 👏 👏 .
